Stephen Gilbert speaks to Bishop Bronscombe School Councillor Katy at St Austell Street Surgery
Stephen Gilbert, the Liberal Democrat Parliamentary candidate for St Austell, launched his first open-air 'Street Surgery' in Fore Street today (Saturday) and met with shoppers, traders and visitors in the town centre.
Billed as 'Street Talking' the event saw Stephen Gilbert on hand to answer questions and take up any problems or concerns faced by local residents.
Commenting, Mr Gilbert said:
"It was great meeting people and hearing their stories and it was a relief that the weather stayed fine! The top issue that came up was the length of time the regeneration is taking, although people do recognise that work is now starting again on the site."
Joined by local Councillors and Lib Dem supporters, Mr Gilbert collected signatures for a petition calling on the Government to take action on the shortage of affordable homes in the area.
He added:
"Time and time again I meet young couples who want to buy a home and start their lives together but just can't afford to. Drastic action from the Government is needed if this is to change, including a cap on the number of second homes in the county."
