Stephen Gilbert, the Prospective MP for St Austell and the clay villages, today joined with campaigners from the St Dennis Action Group to present Cornwall County Council's planning committee with a detailed response to Sita's application for an Environment Agency permit.
Stephen Gilbert said: "Once again Stig have done the community proud. They've worked up a thorough response to the Environment Agency permit application and, with English Heritage also now presenting serious reservations, this is yet another blow to the County Council's wrong-headed plans."
At today's planning meeting local Liberal Democrat Councillors also raised questions about the application.
Cllr Jackie Bull asked what work was being done to look at alternative sites, Cllr John Stocker brought the objection of English Heritage to the attention of the committee and Cllr Joan Vincent said she was "horrified" that there had been tree clearance along one of the proposed access routes and asked for a reassurance that the application would not be "spun out" until there was a new Council.
Stephen Gilbert, who was at the planning meeting, added: "My gut feeling is that momentum is finally building against the plans for the incinerator and we need to keep up the pressure on the Council. It's my hope that, when the application is finally decided, Councillors will reject it and realise incineration is not the right option for Cornwall, one site is not the right solution and St Dennis is not the right place."
