Halos, the Newquay lap-dancing club on Bank Street, must face legal action from Restormel Borough Council over alleged breaches of its licensing conditions - says prospective MP Stephen Gilbert.
Stephen Gilbert challenged Councillors, officers and the Police at the public Newquay & St Columb Community Consultative meeting, on why - 14 weeks after the original Dispatches documentary seemed to show Halos in breach of a number of its licensing conditions - no action had yet been taken by the authorities.
In answer to the question, Cllr Andrew Waters, Chair of Restormel's Licensing Committee, said that the authority was finalising the relevant papers to take action against the club.
Restormel is due to meet this week to decide what action to take.
Stephen Gilbert said: "I hope what Cllr Waters said at the meeting is accurate and that Restormel does take enforcement action against Halos. If the Council fails to take action in the face of what seems like such clear evidence of breaches of the licensing conditions it would send the message that anything goes in Newquay."
The Dispatches documentary was broadcast on Channel 4 on October 6 2008 and seemed to show the so-called 'Gentleman's Club' Halos, based on the town's main street, to be breaking its licensing conditions.
Stephen Gilbert said: "People in Newquay and across Cornwall were shocked by what the documentary revealed and rightly expect the authorities to take action."
The Lib Dem candidate added: "In a large part thanks to the efforts of the thousands of campaigners in Newquay, we have seen a national change of mood on lap-dancing. Government is set to bring forward new laws that will require an annual review of all lap-dancing licenses and give Newquay residents the chance to get their voices heard."
