TIME TO ACT ON PENSIONER POVERTY

March 16, 2009 12:00 PM

Pensioer"It's time to increase the State pension and link it with earnings" Stephen Gilbert, St Austell's prospective MP, today told the Buckler Village Residents' Association.

Stephen Gilbert, who was one of the guest speakers at the resident's association AGM, said:

"100 years ago the Liberal government of Lloyd George introduced the State pension and lifted millions of men and women out of poverty in old age. But in the 1980s the Conservatives broke the link between earnings and now many pensioners often can't make ends meet."

"I believe it's time to end pensioner poverty. The Conservatives say we can't afford to bring back the link to earnings, I say we can't afford not to."

Stephen Gilbert added: "We should not reward people who have worked hard all their lives with poverty in their retirement. We need to see a real boost to the pension, bring back the link with earnings, and abolish the Council Tax."

If you are a resident of the St Austell and Newquay constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
