Steve Gilbert has welcomed the introduction of an ADZ as an important first step in tackling Newquay's problems
Newquay campaigner Steve Gilbert has welcomed the news that Cornwall Council is to introduce an Alcohol Disorder Zone calling it "an important first step" in tackling alcohol fuelled disorder in the town.
The announcement that Cornwall Council will begin working toward an Alcohol Disorder Zone for Newquay was made by Councillor Alec Robertson at the Full Council meeting on Tuesday morning. Steve Gilbert, who attended the Council meeting with scores of Newquay residents, has written to the Leader of the Council asking when the process will start.
Steve Gilbert said "The introduction of an Alcohol Disorder Zone in the town centre will mean that those businesses that are helping fuel the problems in the town will start to pick up the bill for dealing with it. It's an important first step."
The Lib Dem Parliamentary candidate added:
"An ADZ isn't going to solve all the problems though. The Council's licensing and planning departments need to review their policies in Newquay and get tough on the places that are caught serving alcohol to people underage. We don't need more places to get booze in Newquay and we do need more police on our streets, particularly after 4am when the clubs throw out."
He finished: "Cornwall Council should be in no doubt that people in Newquay have had enough and will not stop in demanding their town back when this season ends."
