Newquay's prospective MP, Steve Gilbert, has commented on the problem of under-age drinking and anti-social behaviour in Newquay.
"For too long now the 'powers that be' have had their head in the sand about Newquay's problems. It's like the town Amity in the movie Jaws where the Mayor doesn't want to speak out in case it scares off the tourists. We do have a problem with underage drinking and antisocial behaviour and we need the Council and Police to work together to tackle it.
"The Council needs to get tough on the places that are caught serving alcohol to people underage - they should lose their licences. We need to say no to any more licences for alcohol related activities in the town. We need more police on our streets, particularly after 4am when the clubs throw out. And we need to get the law changed on budget accommodation.
"Personally, I'd like to see the Police phoning the parents of the teenagers who are caught drinking or urinating in our street. They wouldn't let them do it at home and, if they knew what was happening here, I'm sure there would be hell to pay when they got back."
