St Austell & Newquay's new MP Steve Gilbert has announced that he will be supporting The Tanya's Courage Trust, a charity close to his heart, through the first year of this Parliament.
The charity was set up in 2005 in memory of Tanya Billing, a 20 year old cancer sufferer from St Austell. The charity has now helped over 40 young people across Cornwall through the provision of grants towards relieving physical or financial needs.
Steve has become the first local MP to nominate an Annual Charity and will, each year, support the work of a local charity by raising awareness of their work and helping with their fundraising.
Steve Gilbert, who made the announcement at the charity's Annual Celebration Ball on Friday, said:
"This charity is really close to my heart. My father suffers from leukaemia so I know and understand the pressures involved. Arthur Taylor, the son of former MP, Matthew Taylor, also suffered from cancer and was part of the reason for Matthew's retirement.
"The work of this charity is absolutely amazing, and I have been proud to support them for a number of years now. I hope that, through my position as the Member of Parliament, I can help even further.
"To me, being an MP is about helping people. That is my number one priority and that is why I will be supporting the fundraising of a local charity every year."
