Stephen Gilbert, St Austell & Newquay MP, has warned against Cornwall Council's agreement to work with Devon and the Isles of Scilly in forming a 'Local Economic Partnership'.
The announcement came through a joint statement, agreed by Councils in Torbay, Devon, Plymouth, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly came with no consultation of the wider members of Cornwall Council or local people.
Commenting, Stephen Gilbert said:
"Over the last decade Cornwall has achieved so much to develop the local economy by working as one, rather than the 'Devonwall' that it used to be.
"Our county is unique in so many ways and we have exceptional issues affecting us and distinctive challenges ahead. Now, in forming the new Local Enterprise Partnership, we must not lose sight of those differences and we must not lose our own voice.
"We have to recognise that, while we must always work with others when the time and issue requires, we should never lose control of Cornwall's destiny. I firmly believe that we do well when we stand alone, on our own two feet, rather than being dependent on others, and I believe that the new 'LEP' should reflect that."
