Stephen Gilbert, Liberal Democrat MP for St Austell & Newquay, has welcomed the move by Cornwall Council to approve the UK's first commercial Geothermal Power Plant to be built in Cornwall.
The plant, planned for Redruth, will produce enough electricity to power a town twice the size of St Austell and enough heat energy to heat 20 schools.
But, Mr Gilbert has called for further investment in green power in Cornwall and for this to be the beginning of building Cornwall up as a world leader in Green Technology that could see new jobs and a new economy come to the county.
Commenting, Stephen Gilbert said:
"This is a great start for green power in Cornwall. I am thrilled that Cornwall Council have given this project the go ahead, and I want to see much more investment in these projects across the rest of Cornwall.
"There is a similar plan for a Deep Geothermal Power Plant at the Eden Project in my constituency, a scheme which will I am backing all the way.
"Cornwall is ideally placed to be a world leader in Green Technology, we have the sun, the sea, the hot rocks and even the wind to make these projects stack up. If it's a success, it even has the potential to bring the new, year round, jobs, new investment and the renewed economy that Cornwall desperately needs."
