St Austell & Newquay MP, Stephen Gilbert, has today joined calls for a dedicated Minister for Older People as part of the national campaign, Grey Pride.
Speaking at an event in the House of Commons today, Stephen Gilbert said:
"In the next 25 years, the average age of people in the UK will rise to 42.2 years and the number of over 85 year olds will double. It means that the needs and concerns of older people become even more important socially, politically and personally.
"As problems intensify in our care system, the pension crisis continues to generate headlines and conditions such as dementia affect more and more people in our communities - a dedicated Minister for Older People would allow for a more joined up approach to the many policies that affect this significant group in our society.
"In a day when we have a Minister for Children; a Minister for Food and a Minister for Pubs, there's no excuse for the Government not also appointing a Minister for Older People and I'm proud to back Grey Pride's campaign today."
