Stephen Gilbert MP has welcomed today's announcement that St Austell's rail station is to receive much-needed investment as part of the increase in government funding for the Access for All programme.
Transport Minister Norman Baker MP said in his statement to the House of Commons:
"I am pleased to announce today a further £37.5 million pounds of "mid-tier" Access for all funding. Major improvements will take place at stations across the country including at London Paddington, St. Austell, Stratford-upon-Avon and Ystrad Mynach."
The work funded by today's announcement should be completed by March 2014.
Stephen has been campaigning in Westminster for many months on this issue and recently met with the Transport Minister to put the case forward for this funding.
Lib Dem MP for mid-Cornwall, Stephen Gilbert, said:
"As a candidate I highlighted the need to finish the work started at St Austell - the station couldn't be left as it is now.
"I am thrilled that the Department for Transport has listened to the needs of the local community by deciding to finish the job in St Austell.
"An improved station will be immensely beneficial to the town; it will encourage visitors and aid local businesses, and enhance St. Austell as a hub for tourism for years to come."
