STEPHEN GILBERT PRESENTS BILL CALLING FOR REGULATION OF PARK HOME SITE OWNERS

January 10, 2012 7:03 PM

Maiden speechStephen Gilbert, the Liberal Democrat MP for mid-Cornwall, today introduced a Parliamentary '10 Minute Rule Bill' which would introduce a 'fit and proper person' test for the owners of Park Home sites.

Park Homes are bungalow style properties often housing elderly or retired residents on sites of up to several hundred similar properties. There are over 700 park homes in Stephen's St Austell & Newquay Constituency and an estimated 250,000 people live in the homes nationwide.

A recent survey showed that almost two-thirds of Park Home residents reported living under unacceptable conditions, and half saying that they suffered bullying or harassment from the park owner.

Stephen Gilbert, said:

"While the majority of Park Home site owners are good, honest and caring people; there is no doubt that there are also many who give the practice a bad name. I've heard horror stories of site owners who have bullied their residents out of their home in order to make a quick-buck on the sale of a new property; this simply must not be allowed to continue.

"I believe that by introducing a fit and proper person test, we can ensure that standards are kept across the board and that everyone can enjoy living in peace and comfort, especially given the often vulnerable nature of the occupiers of these homes."

If you are a resident of the St Austell and Newquay constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
