ST AUSTELL CINEMA: "ONE STEP" CLOSER11.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Fri 3rd Oct 2008
Commenting on today's "topping-out" of the new White River cinema by owners WTW Cinemas and contractor Sir Robert McAlpine, Stephen Gilbert the Liberal Democrat Parliamentary candidate for St Austell, said: "St Austell is Cornwall's largest town and deserves a town centre that we can all be proud of. The redevelopment has been at times slow and frustrating for local people and traders, but I think there is now a real sense that we have a turned a corner and are in the home straight. It's great that the cinema is on-track and although the finish line is still some way off we are getting closer by the day". White River Cinema will be the first new purpose-built cinema complex to be constructed for over 70 years in Cornwall and replaces the St Austell Filmcentre which closed its doors for the final time in August 2007.
